Iconic – The Supremes

The Express Yourself Pop Choir meet on Mondays in term time at Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0DZ and are accepting new singers now! No auditions and no prior experience necessary.

The theme for this year’s Winter Show is “Iconic”. So I thought it might be fun to share a few of the choir’s favourite icons.

The Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown’s acts and are, to date, America’s most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles!

Written and produced by Motown’s main production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland, 1966’s “You Can’t Hurry Love” is one of the signature Supremes songs. Plus, if you consider Phil Collins to be an icon then we’ve got a two-for-one because he released the song 16 years later.

Thanks to Wikipedia for the group and song information.

New Term 12th September 2016

Come and sing popular songs with simple harmonies. There are no auditions and everyone is welcome regardless of ability.  It’s an excellent way to meet new people in a relaxed, friendly environment.

We rehearse on Mondays every week in term time at Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0DZ on Mondays from 7:30pm until 9:00pm. The first rehearsal of the term is 12th September 2016 but we welcome new members throughtout the year.

10 monthly payments of £20.54 by standing order. You can also pay in termly installments or weekly installments if you prefer.

How to Join
Just call Helen Russell on 01905 747827. We’re a community choir so there are no auditions.

What sort of songs do you sing?
All sorts of things taken from suggestions from the choir. We choose brand new songs for each show so we don’t get bored of singing the same things all the time! In Pop Choir this year we have sung Pitch Perfect, Dolly Parton, Bee Gees, Bruno Mars and Amy Winehouse. If you prefer Show Tunes then we do those too! We’ve sung songs from Wicked, West Side Story, Aladdin, Matilda, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma and Les Miserables.

Do I need to read music?
Not at all. If there are any harmonies then we learn them by ear.

Can I start partway through the term?
Of course! You can join anytime you like.

Do you have any social events?
We sure do!! After each concert we have an “official” social like a Fish and Chip Quiz Night, Picnic or Christmas Dinner. Plus, because we are such a friendly bunch we are always arranging “unofficial” trips to the theatre, cinema or the pub! Last summer we even went camping!!!

Will there be anyone “like me”?
We have 50 singers in Pop Choir aged from early 20s to young at heart retirees!! Then in between there’re loads of people just like Helen (30s, two little boys!) We also have a gang of men who sit at the back and make mischief!! Under 16s are welcome but they must always be accompanied by an adult.

Blockbusters Show This Saturday

Discounted tickets are available online in advance here or full price on the door.
On the door prices are £7 for adults and £4 for children over 5.

Summer Show 2016 Poster

Next rehearsal

The next rehearsal for Pop Choir is Monday 13th June for the final run up to our big BLOCKBUSTER concert on 16th July!

Saturday Night Fever

One more day until our kick-off rehearsal for this year’s big Summer Show. Most of the songs have been chosen and every single one is from an iconic Blockbuster movie.

You can’t get much more iconic than Saturday Night Fever!

Did you know the Bee Gees weren’t even involved until the filming had finished? John Travolta filmed his dance scenes to Stevie Wonder and Boz Scaggs! (Wikipedia)

Plus they loved the song Night Fever so much that they changed the film’s name from Saturday Night to Saturday Night Fever! (IMDB)

So if you fancy singing along to a disco classic and maybe showing us a few of your moves then come along to the Express Yourself Pop Choir rehearsal at the Lyppard Hub at 7:30 on Monday 18th January 2016.

Blues Brothers Vote

Well I KNOW we need at least one song from Jake and Elwood Blues but I just can’t decide! I’ve finally narrowed my long list down to just two. Why not pop along to our Facebook Group and have your say! Which one should we sing?
