Les Misérables

Have you always wanted to be in a choir? Why not join our friendly, non-auditioned choir at Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester on Monday 9th January 2017 at 7:30pm. All adults are welcome, regardless of experience or ability.

I’m not the only member of Express Yourself Pop Choir that loves Les Mis! We had a choir trip to London to see it a couple of years ago, and even our less enthusiastic members were blown away. Some of the songs have amazing harmonies, others have intricate weaving of different melodies from previous solos. However, “Do You Hear The People Sing” is simple and yet dramatic. A great song that is used again for great effect as the finale!

Did you know that it was only re-used as the full ensemble finale when the English language version was produced. The original French version didn’t include it.

If you want to sing great songs with us this term then come along on Monday!

Matilda

As you know, I’m currently working my way through all my favourite pop songs and musicals to put together next term’s repertoire for Express Yourself Pop Choir. Our first rehearsal is Monday 9th January 2017 and we always welcome new members with open arms so pop along to Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0SY. We’re a community choir so there are no auditions and everyone is welcome.

A couple of years ago I organised choir trip to London to see Matilda. It was a fantastic day and an amazing show. There are so many great songs but I have a particular soft spot for Naughty and the super cute When I Grow Up.

I love watching this medley of the two songs from a Royal Variety Performance.

When I’m Gone – Pitch Perfect

I’m working my way through the long list of songs suggested by the choir for next term’s Express Yourself Pop Choir “Stage and Screen” show.

Pitch Perfect is obviously going to be a favourite film for singers! Some great arrangements and mashups of songs sung by the Barden Bella’s and their acapella rivals. However there’s also a lovely gem sung by Beca for her Bella audition known as The Cup Song because it’s accompanied by rhythm cups. It also made a gorgeous harmonious appearance in Pitch Perfect 2 round the campfire.

Lulu and the Lampshades added the cup rhythms, and lots more, in their version called You’re Gonna Miss Me which is a cover of The Carter Family‘s When I’m Gone. It’s fascinating to listen to the different versions.

However here it is done brilliantly as always by YouTube superstar, musician and songwriter Kurt Schneider with Sam Tsui, Alex G and Kina Grannis. A beautiful arrangement, excellent musicianship and accomplished Rhythm Cupping!!

Remember the new term starts on Monday 9th January 2017 at 7:30pm at Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester. No auditions and everyone’s welcome.

Stage and Screen

What a fantastic year 2016 was for Express Yourself Pop Choir. We had two amazing concerts to raise money for the Myriad Centre in Worcester and now we’re all enjoying a break over Christmas.

However, while you’re all relaxing (well, at least I hope you are – for a few minutes at least) I’m busy trawling through all the suggestions for next term provided by the choir.

The final list is still a way off, but I’ll share some of the suggestions from the choir. Our theme is Stage and Screen so we’ll have a good spread of classic and modern show tunes with a bit of pop thrown in!

If you’re interested in joining us, our next rehearsal is on Monday 9th January at 7:30pm at the Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester.

Iconic – The Supremes

supremes

The Express Yourself Pop Choir meet on Mondays in term time at Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0DZ and are accepting new singers now! No auditions and no prior experience necessary.

The theme for this year’s Winter Show is “Iconic”. So I thought it might be fun to share a few of the choir’s favourite icons.

The Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown’s acts and are, to date, America’s most successful vocal group with 12 number one singles!

Written and produced by Motown’s main production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland, 1966’s “You Can’t Hurry Love” is one of the signature Supremes songs. Plus, if you consider Phil Collins to be an icon then we’ve got a two-for-one because he released the song 16 years later.

Thanks to Wikipedia for the group and song information.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What sort of songs do you sing?
All sorts of things taken from suggestions from the choir. We choose brand new songs for each show so we don’t get bored of singing the same things all the time! In Pop Choir this year we have sung Pitch Perfect, Dolly Parton, Bee Gees, Bruno Mars and Amy Winehouse. If you prefer Show Tunes then we do those too! We’ve sung songs from Wicked, West Side Story, Aladdin, Matilda, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma and Les Miserables.

Do I need to read music?
Not at all. If there are any harmonies then we learn them by ear.

Can I start partway through the term?
Of course! You can join anytime you like.

Do you have any social events?
We sure do!! After each concert we have an “official” social like a Fish and Chip Quiz Night, Picnic or Christmas Dinner. Plus, because we are such a friendly bunch we are always arranging “unofficial” trips to the theatre, cinema or the pub! Last summer we even went camping!!!

Will there be anyone “like me”?
We have 50 singers in Pop Choir aged from early 20s to young at heart retirees!! Then in between there’re loads of people just like Helen (30s, two little boys!) We also have a gang of men who sit at the back and make mischief!! Under 16s are welcome but they must always be accompanied by an adult.
