Beggin’

We don’t need to beg you to come to pop choir! Not after you’ve seen how much fun we have!

So how about you come and try us out this Monday at 7:30pm at Lyppard Grange Community Centre.

Here’s a little taste of what we’ll be doing…

Running Up That Hill

No!! Don’t be silly! I haven’t got any daft New Year’s Resolutions involving running!

My New Year’s Resolution is to sing more… is that even possible?

If your resolution is to do something new, something musical, something fun or perhaps something “Just for you”, then come along to Express Yourself Pop Choir. We meet at 7:30pm every Monday in term-time at Lyppard Grange Community Centre, Worcester, WR4 0SY and sing fun pop songs and show tunes.

Here’s one by Kate Bush that we’ll be doing this week! Hope to see you there!

Swimming helps me sing!

Here is an article about the benefits on swimming for the singing voice. I wrote this earlier in the year for my teaching blog.

Helen Russell Music

I have recently started swimming to keep fit and relax.  I’m not training seriously but I am trying to push myself gently.  When I started I was keeping my head above the water, which is clearly silly because you end up with neck ache!!  So I decided to invest in some goggles and a swim cap and push myself to swim under water.  Still only breaststroke though! If I try front-crawl I start choking!!!

I noticed that on mornings where I went swimming I was much more relaxed when singing.  I thought it was just a feel good factor but now I think I’m subconsciously improving my singing technique while swimming!!

Before Christmas I bought a brilliant new book by Jenevora Williams called Teaching Singing to Children and Young Adults.  I started reading her section on de-constriction.  Now this is something I have trouble with myself.  When I get stressed…

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What sort of songs do you sing?

All sorts of things. We all make suggestions and then vote for our favourites. We choose new songs at the start of every term so we don’t get bored of singing the same things all the time! In Pop Choir this year we have sung The Foundations, Amy Winehouse, The Righteous Brothers, Jessie J, Olly Murs, Ben E King, Cee-lo Green, Dusty Springfield, Andy Williams and Take That. If you prefer Show Tunes then we do those too! We’ve sung songs from Wicked, West Side Story, Aladdin, Matilda, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma and Les Miserables. Here’s a review of our last show. Check out our blog to see which songs we’re doing this term!

Do I need to read music?

Not at all. If there are any harmonies then we learn them by ear.

Can I start partway through the term?
Of course! You can join anytime you like. If you join late in the term then you may feel you don’t want to join in the end of term show. But don’t worry, you can always use your lyric sheets, even in the show! Anything you need to feel confident! We have had people start during our very last rehearsal and still perform in the concert!!

Do you have any social events?
We sure do!! Every term we have an “official” social like a Fish and Chip Quiz Night or Christmas Dinner. Plus, because we are such a friendly bunch we are always arranging “unofficial” trips to the theatre, cinema or the pub! This summer we’re even going camping!!!

Will there be anyone “like me”?
We have 50 singers in Pop Choir aged from early 20s to young at heart retirees!! Then in between there’re loads of people just like Helen (mid 30s, two little boys!) We also have a gang of men who sit at the back and make mischief!! Under 18s are welcome but they must always be accompanied by an adult.

Tuition

About Us

About The Express Yourself Choirs

In 2009 I created Express Yourself Community Choir in Worcester. I wanted to make music fun and accessible to all, regardless of ability. It went from strength to strength and I soon realised that there was a real demand for fun, relaxed, audition free music making. I could utilise my qualities as a teacher and musician whilst helping the community learn how rewarding making music can be. My philosophy is that everyone can sing make music and have fun. All people need is an opportunity, encouragement and self-confidence. Now we are called  Express Yourself Pop Choir and we sing Pop Songs and the very best modern Show Tunes.
