Running Up That Hill

No!! Don’t be silly! I haven’t got any daft New Year’s Resolutions involving running!

My New Year’s Resolution is to sing more… is that even possible?

If your resolution is to do something new, something musical, something fun or perhaps something “Just for you”, then come along to Express Yourself Pop Choir. We meet at 7:30pm every Monday in term-time at Lyppard Grange Community Centre, Worcester, WR4 0SY and sing fun pop songs and show tunes.

Here’s one by Kate Bush that we’ll be doing this week! Hope to see you there!

Big Birthday Coming Up!

It seems like only yesterday that I put up a little poster at Lyppard Grange Community Centre in Worcester, looking for like-minded singers to start a community choir.

Here we are 5 years later thinking about our fifth anniversary concert!

Well we have the date and the venue – now for the songs!

Over the last five years we have learnt over 200 fantastic pop songs and show tunes! I think we should make this anniversary concert a “Best of”.

So get your thinking caps on! Which songs have been your favourites?

Christmas Starts Here!

Although it’s still November, the Express Yourself Pop Choir and Show Tunes Choir are already practising for Christmas!

The first outing for our Christmas repertoire is at the Lyppard Grange Community Centre’s Christmas Shopping Evening this Saturday (23rd November 2013) at 6:30pm. Entry is £1.50 and the centre is raising money for the charity Diabetes UK.

Our big Winter Show is on 14th December 2013 at Tudor Grange Academy Worcester. Tickets are £6.00 for adults, £3.50 for children and under 5s are free. There will be a charity raffle for the Worcester Women’s Refuge, which is our nominated charity for this year.

If you decide to come along, make sure you say hello!

Lego House by Ed Sheeran

Monday October 15th 2012 – I was sat eating my breakfast and listening to Nick Grimshaw on BBC Radio One. Well actually I wasn’t sat, I was racing round trying to get the kids ready for school! I digress…. Nick announced that Ed Sheeran was going to be on the show the next day and he wanted listeners to send in their own versions of Ed’s songs. Well you don’t need to ask ME twice.  Seconds later I’d sent an email to the whole of Express Yourself Pop Choir with instructions to brush their hair and wear their choir tops cos we were going to make a video!!

That night, at rehearsal, in super quick time, we created this video to send to Ed. I don’t know if he ever watched it but perhaps he did.  I hope he enjoyed it because we certainly enjoyed making it!

So here it is! To Ed Sheeran with love from Express Yourself Pop Choir, Worcester xxxx

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What sort of songs do you sing?

All sorts of things. We all make suggestions and then vote for our favourites. We choose new songs at the start of every term so we don’t get bored of singing the same things all the time! In Pop Choir this year we have sung The Foundations, Amy Winehouse, The Righteous Brothers, Jessie J, Olly Murs, Ben E King, Cee-lo Green, Dusty Springfield, Andy Williams and Take That. If you prefer Show Tunes then we do those too! We’ve sung songs from Wicked, West Side Story, Aladdin, Matilda, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma and Les Miserables. Here’s a review of our last show. Check out our blog to see which songs we’re doing this term!

Do I need to read music?

Not at all. If there are any harmonies then we learn them by ear.

Can I start partway through the term?
Of course! You can join anytime you like. If you join late in the term then you may feel you don’t want to join in the end of term show. But don’t worry, you can always use your lyric sheets, even in the show! Anything you need to feel confident! We have had people start during our very last rehearsal and still perform in the concert!!

Do you have any social events?
We sure do!! Every term we have an “official” social like a Fish and Chip Quiz Night or Christmas Dinner. Plus, because we are such a friendly bunch we are always arranging “unofficial” trips to the theatre, cinema or the pub! This summer we’re even going camping!!!

Will there be anyone “like me”?
We have 50 singers in Pop Choir aged from early 20s to young at heart retirees!! Then in between there’re loads of people just like Helen (mid 30s, two little boys!) We also have a gang of men who sit at the back and make mischief!! Under 18s are welcome but they must always be accompanied by an adult.
