As you know, I’m currently working my way through all my favourite pop songs and musicals to put together next term’s repertoire for Express Yourself Pop Choir. Our first rehearsal is Monday 9th January 2017 and we always welcome new members with open arms so pop along to Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0SY. We’re a community choir so there are no auditions and everyone is welcome.
A couple of years ago I organised choir trip to London to see Matilda. It was a fantastic day and an amazing show. There are so many great songs but I have a particular soft spot for Naughty and the super cute When I Grow Up.
I love watching this medley of the two songs from a Royal Variety Performance.
I’m working my way through the long list of songs suggested by the choir for next term’s Express Yourself Pop Choir “Stage and Screen” show.
Pitch Perfect is obviously going to be a favourite film for singers! Some great arrangements and mashups of songs sung by the Barden Bella’s and their acapella rivals. However there’s also a lovely gem sung by Beca for her Bella audition known as The Cup Song because it’s accompanied by rhythm cups. It also made a gorgeous harmonious appearance in Pitch Perfect 2 round the campfire.
Lulu and the Lampshades added the cup rhythms, and lots more, in their version called You’re Gonna Miss Me which is a cover of The Carter Family‘s When I’m Gone. It’s fascinating to listen to the different versions.
However here it is done brilliantly as always by YouTube superstar, musician and songwriter Kurt Schneider with Sam Tsui, Alex G and Kina Grannis. A beautiful arrangement, excellent musicianship and accomplished Rhythm Cupping!!
Remember the new term starts on Monday 9th January 2017 at 7:30pm at Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester. No auditions and everyone’s welcome.
What a fantastic year 2016 was for Express Yourself Pop Choir. We had two amazing concerts to raise money for the Myriad Centre in Worcester and now we’re all enjoying a break over Christmas.
However, while you’re all relaxing (well, at least I hope you are – for a few minutes at least) I’m busy trawling through all the suggestions for next term provided by the choir.
The final list is still a way off, but I’ll share some of the suggestions from the choir. Our theme is Stage and Screen so we’ll have a good spread of classic and modern show tunes with a bit of pop thrown in!
If you’re interested in joining us, our next rehearsal is on Monday 9th January at 7:30pm at the Lyppard Hub, Warndon Villages, Worcester.
No!! Don’t be silly! I haven’t got any daft New Year’s Resolutions involving running!
My New Year’s Resolution is to sing more… is that even possible?
If your resolution is to do something new, something musical, something fun or perhaps something “Just for you”, then come along to Express Yourself Pop Choir. We meet at 7:30pm every Monday in term-time at Lyppard Grange Community Centre, Worcester, WR4 0SY and sing fun pop songs and show tunes.
Here’s one by Kate Bush that we’ll be doing this week! Hope to see you there!
Express Yourself Pop Choir is taking a break now over the summer holidays but we’ll be back as usual on Monday nights at 7:30pm at Lyppard Grange Community Centre from Monday 1st September 2014
All new songs in September – so I’ll be busy over the summer break choosing the best of current and classic pop with some funky show tunes to add a bit of cheese!!
Have a great summer and see you in September!
So last night we had a record number of singers at Pop Choir! Because we’ve joined forces with the Show Tunes Choir!
Instead of coming out on two different nights for Pop Song and Show Tunes, you can now come to one all singing, all dancing (well not so much of the dancing!) super choir!!
No need to choose! Come and do both!!
Mondays at 7:30pm at Lyppard Grange Community Centre, Warndon Villages, Worcester WR4 0DZ. Give Helen a call on 01905 747827 if you’re interested in joining us!

Interested in joining Express Yourself Pop Choir this term? Well then you might want to take a look at some of the songs we’ll be learning. They are all new to the choir so everyone will be in the same boat. What better time to start?
Our first rehearsal is this Monday 6th January 2014 at 7:30pm. Just give Helen a call on 01905 747827 or email email@example.com.
Here’s one of our new songs. It’s Ho Hey by the Lumineers. You might have seen it on the US hit show Nashville sung by the uber-sweet Lennon and Maisy. Here they are, live at the Grand Ole Oprey.
One of my favourite movies is the 2007 Disney film Enchanted. It’s a clever homage/parody of the classic Disney Princess films. It uses a mixture of animation and live action. What makes it such a wonderful parody is the fact the cute songs are written by Oscar winner and Disney stalwart Alan Menken!
The main character is Giselle (Amy Adams), a peasant girl living in Fairy Tale Land (as a cartoon!) who it seems is destined to marry her one true love, the handsome prince Edward (James Marsden). Unfortunately for her, Edward’s wicked stepmother (Susan Sarandon) tricks her into falling through a portal into real life New York! Where the characters are not simpering naive cartoons, but hardened live action New Yorkers.
Giselle meets McDreamy, ahem I mean Robert (Patrick Dempsey) and he takes her in – for one night only! In the morning she awakes and is horrified to see the state of his apartment so decides to clean it up in true Disney style with the help of some little animal helpers (although New York animals aren’t quite as clean and fluffy as those in Fairytale Land) and of course a Happy Working Song!
So this term we’re going to be singing Giselle’s chirpy and sweet Happy Working Song! If you fancy singing with us then we meet on Mondays at 7:30pm at Lyppard Grange Community Centre, Worcester WR4 0DZ. Give me a call on 01905 747827.
Here’s Amy Adams as Giselle to show us how it’s done!
